Cheesy Baked Tuna Melt Sandwiches made with canned tuna, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, celery and mayo, a quick and easy comfort food for all ages. Unlike traditional pan-fried version, these baked tuna melts are fuss free and are ideal for feeding the whole family at once. This 15-minute recipe is ideal for busy lunches or quick dinners.

When time is short, but you still crave something more substantial than a plain cold sandwich and you could do with something equally comforting, these delicious tuna melt sandwiches are an absolute treat, and are guaranteed to go down with everyone in the family.
Take the good old cheese on toast to the next level by adding some canned tuna, a bit of crunch coming from celery and tomatoes, and you get a hearty hot sandwich that is great all year round.
You could make it in a pan too, but if you cook for more people, you will have to make them one by one, whereas in the oven you can make them all at the same time, which saves quite a bit of time and effort.
Cold, it could still be an okayish sandwich, but toasted is a game changer! You get golden and crunchy bread and a hot filling that is so good, everybody will ask for seconds. And all this possible with simple everyday pantry ingredients.

Ingredients overview

- canned tuna - you can use either tuna in brine or in oil, it doesn't make much of a difference, just make sure you drain the liquid really well before adding it to the rest of the ingredients
- grated cheese - I went for good old cheddar cheese, but you can use any other hard cheese
- bread slices - I used white tiger bread, which toasts really nicely, but you can go for anything else you have around
- celery and tomatoes - chopped finely, they add colour and a nice crunch
- mayo - always full fat with me!
- lemon juice -cuts through the richness of the mayo and balances out the flavour
- spring onion - for taste and crunch
- spreadable/butter - helps with an even golden colour and a good crunch
- salt and pepper - to taste
Step-by-step photos and instructions
- chop the celery and tomatoes finely and add them to a large bowl
- drain tuna tins well, and add the tuna to the bowl together with the mayo, salt, pepper, lemon juice and cheese
- mix well
- butter each side of the bread slices, spread the tuna mixture evenly between each slice and arrange them onto a baking tray
- bake in the preheated oven at 200 degrees Celsius (390 Fahrenheit) for 8-10 minutes or until golden

Expert tips
Drain the tuna well, excess moisture will result in soggy and messy sandwiches. Butter the bread generously, it's what gives the sandwiches that golden, crunchy finish.
You can also add any of ingredients you like to your hot sandwiches, pickles, red onion, sweetcorn, olives, jalapenos, are all great additions that will take your tuna melt to the next level.
