Seafood Stew in a delicious tomato sauce, a quick and easy dish that is ready in well under 15 minutes. It's made with frozen mixed seafood, which makes it very affordable too; such a hearty, yet light recipe that it will go down well with absolutely everyone.
This dish is the best example that delicious food can be made at home too, and with a few easy ingredients, without the extortionate price that comes with eating out. Seafood is a great choice if you are looking for some easy and healthy recipes, but also ideal for a romantic meal for two.
And with Valentine's Day just round the corner, this could easily be transformed into a fancy dinner to impress your loved one. You don't need to prep anything it advance, and it's on the table in no time.
It's actually best served hot straight away, while the flavours are at their best, and the seafood has the best texture. We served our stew with slices of baguette bread, but it can also made into a delicious base for your favourite pasta.
It's pretty similar to my Seafood Pasta, although that recipe is made with fresh tomatoes, rather than chopped tomatoes, like this stew. So if you don't know what to do with a bag of frozen mixed seafood, this hearty stew is the recipe for you!

Ingredients needed
- frozen mixed seafood - prawns/shrimp, squid rings, mussels, it comes in a large 1kg pack in fishmongers' but also large supermarkets
- onion - any kind you have
- garlic - the more the merrier
- olive oil - or any other oil of your choice
- chilli flakes - or fresh chilli if you prefer
- chopped tomatoes - if you have lots of fresh, juicy tomatoes, they can be used too
- a handful of frozen or fresh spinach - for extra goodness
- fresh herbs - optional
- salt & ground black pepper - to taste
Step-by-step photos and instructions
- in a pot, heat up the oil, add the chopped onion and fry until golden
- add the chopped garlic and leave it to fry for a further 1 minute
- add the chopped tomatoes, give everything a good stir, and leave to cook for 3-4 minutes for the sauce to be reduced
- in goes the seafood - place a lid on the pot, and leave to cook - if you use frozen seafood like I did, it doesn't take longer than 5 minutes for it to be ready, fresh seafood only needs a minute or 2 to heat up well
- add the spinach or parsley - or both of them, give everything a good stir, and take off the heat
What other seafood can I use?
Ah, what a dish this is! We absolutely loved it, and tasted even better than a posh restaurant meal - this will definitely make its way back on the menu!
The mixed seafood bag I used had prawns/shrimp, squid rings and mussels - they were all shelled already, which made the job pretty easy. If you use fresh mixed seafood that has the mussels still it their shells, make sure you cook them until the shells are open, and discard the ones that are still closed.
The cooking time should not be too different, we are talking about 2-3 minutes difference between cooking fresh or from frozen.
You can also add any fresh fish you have around - salmon or white fish would be a great option, as they cook quickly - I used sea bass and white prawns for my Fish and Prawn Stew and they were a great combo!
Can I add add veggies to it?
You can add some veggies to up its nutritional value: peppers, greens or any other veggies that cook quickly, once the seafood is in, the cooking time is short, otherwise the seafood becomes rubbery and tough if cooked for too long.

I'm going to do this recipe for this evenings meal Danielle. Having read it through, I cannot see the chilli flakes mentioned other than in the ingredients list

Thank you for letting me know, I will update the recipe card! The chilli flakes can be added after the onions are ready.
