Pear Crumble with Walnut Oat Topping and a hint of cinnamon, a celebration of seasonal fruit in a dessert that ticks all the boxes. The topping has a wonderful crunch, while the pears are juicy and bursting with Harvest flavours. It's an easy family-friendly dessert that shows why homemade baking is the best!

Crumbles are an incredibly easy dessert to put together, and no matter what fruit you choose as you base, you know you are in for a treat! They are budget-friendly, delicious, and so versatile, my go to when I have some fruit around that needs using up sooner rather than later.
Pears are in season from late August, and my goodness, they are so delicious! I love all sorts of fruit, and I always try to enjoy as much seasonal produce as I can, the farmers' market is your best place for finding local fruit that is as good as it gets.
Pears and walnuts are a great combo, they simply work wonderfully well together and make any dish special. The walnuts add a fantastic crunch to the topping, as well as the oats, whereas the pears and cinnamon stay juicy and delicious.
Serve this crumble with good old vanilla ice cream or a classic custard, and you have a heavenly scruptious dessert that your whole family will absolutely love. The crumble doesn't need storing in the fridge, and it lasts well for a few days, so worth baking a big batch!

Ingredients overview

- pears - I used fresh juicy pears that are now in season, they are so delicious, and perfect for this dessert
- flour - regular plain flour works the best
- oats - I used porridge oats or oatmeal, but jumbo oats work too, the texture will be a bit different though, as the jumbo ones are bigger and crispier
- walnuts - no need to toast them beforehand, as they will toast during baking
- butter - I like salted butter for crumbles, as it balances out the sweetness of the sugar
- ground cinnamon - pairs nicely with the pears and adds a comforting and cosy Harvest touch
- light brown sugar - added to the pears and cinnamon for even more deliciousness
- granulated sugar - added to the topping for a sweet and crispy touch
Step-by-step photos and instructions
- in a large mixing bowl, add the flour and butter cut into cubes, and use your fingertips to rub the flour and butter together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs - don't worry about it looking like fine breadcrumbs, the larger bits of butter and flour will crisp up nicely
- add the granulated sugar, oats and chopped walnuts and mix well to combine
- peel, core and cut the pears into small chunks
- add the cinnamon and light brown sugar to them, and mix well to combine
- butter an overproof dish, add the pears in an even layer, and top with the walnut mixture
- bake in the preheated oven at 190 degrees Celsius (375 Fahrenheit) for 40 minutes or until the topping is golden

Expert tips
Make sure the butter you use is cold straight from the fridge, it will help with a crispier topping. You can refrigerate the topping while you get the apples ready, just so the butter can stay cool.
Do not add the walnuts to the pear mixture, as they tend to get pretty soft, whereas if you add them to the topping, they toast nicely and get a lovely crunch that takes the pear crisp to the next level.
You can mix the pears with any other season fruit you have around, at this time of the year apples, plums, blackberries, blueberries are in season, and they make a great combo.
