Mini Sausage Rolls, a delicious appetizer or snack for all occasions. They are super easy to make using shop-bought sausagemeat and puff pastry, with a sprinkle of sesame and poppy seeds. These bites are super popular with all ages, and make the ideal snack for any party, celebration or picnic.
Perhaps one of the most popular snacks in the UK, the good old sausage roll is hard to beat when it comes to any party or celebration. Not only they are more than affordable, but they are also filling and delicious.
And while buying ready made sausage rolls is rather easy, making your own homemade sausage rolls it's a lot easier than you'd think. Sausage meat or sausagemeat ( ground pork sausage), which is another commonly used spelling is easily available in most supermarkets and butcher's shops.
Or, if you can't find sausage meat, which can come either ready rolled as a long skinless sausage or in a similar packet as mince meat, you can also use regular sausages which you can skin and use the meat. And the beauty about sausage meat is that it's already seasoned, so there is nothing else you need to add to it.
Well, at least as far as I am concerned, less is always more. Simplicity can also translate as delicious. But, if you wish, you can make the sausage rolls as posh as you like by adding caramelised onions, fresh herbs, garlic and so on.

Ingredients used
- sausage meat - I used a sausage meat stick that weights 500 g or 2.1 lb
- puff pastry - I used a ready-rolled puff pastry, block puff pastry is also ok
- egg - for brushing the rolls
- sesame and poppy seeds - for decorating
Step-by-step photos and instructions
- preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (390 Fahrenheit, 180 fan oven)
- roll the puff pastry and add the sausage meat stick in the middle of it
- roll the pastry, cutting off the excess with a sharp knife
- cut the roll into mini rolls of 3 cm in thickness
- beat the egg well, then brush every mini roll well
- sprinkle each roll with sesame and poppy seeds
- arrange the rolls onto a baking tray and bake for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden and the meat is cooked through
Expert tips
If you use regular sausages instead of sausagemeat, simply squeeze the sausage meat out of the skin, and shape everything into a large sausage like the ready-made sausagemeat stick I used.
If you do not have poppy and/or sesame seeds, not to worry, the rolls will still taste delicious without, it's more a matter of aesthetic I guess.
You do not need to cook the sausagemeat before adding it to the pastry, it goes in raw - it does have time to cook perfectly well in the oven.
