Grilled Prawns served with garlic butter sauce, a fantastic recipe for the grilling season. These white prawns are super quick and easy to make and have a delicious spicy kick. Cook them in their shells to keep them juicy and tender, and you'll get the best spicy prawns / shrimp you can ask for.
In the heat on the summer, there is nothing better than a nice family gathering for a quick backyard BBQ or a light dinner that you hadn't had to slave over for hours.
And these white prawns (or shrimp in the US) are just perfect to throw on a barbie, if you like the old-fashioned way with charcoal and all that, or simply use an electric grill ( I use George Foreman) or grill pan, they all work just as well.
Cooking prawns in their shells in a game-changer, the shells keep them moist and juicy, and lock the flavours in. Plus, it's so easy to remove the shells once the prawns are cooked. It is a bit messy, but boy, it's just so delicious!
And while you can enjoy the prawns just tossed in olive oil with paprika, chilli flakes, salt and pepper, drizzling some garlic butter sauce over adds so much more flavour. Especially when you add some fresh herbs that take the sauce to the next level!
I used garlic butter sauce for my Baked Sea Bass with Lemon Butter Sauce, although that sauce also uses lemon for a citrussy kick. You can definitely use it for this recipe too!

Ingredients used for the white prawns
- white prawns - I cooked them in their shell, if you don't have white prawns you can use tiger prawns or any jumbo shell-on prawns you can get from your local supermarket or fishmonger's
- olive oil - for tossing the prawns in, the seasoning sticks to the prawns better if you use oil
- paprika - I used regular paprika, but hot or smoked paprika would also work
- chilli flakes - you can also use chilli poweder
- garlic granules - or garlic powder
- salt and pepper - to taste
Ingredients used for the garlic butter sauce
- butter - I used salted butter, I actually rarely cook with unsalted one. The salted butter adds more flavour, and then I can control the amount of salt I used in any recipe
- garlic - the more, the merrier, you can't really go wrong here
- chilli flakes - for a spicy kick
- fresh dill and parsley - they add so much flavour, and work great with seafood in general
Step-by-step photos and instructions
- add the prawns to mixing bowl together with the paprika, chilli flakes, salt, pepper and garlic granules
- toss well to combine
- heat up the electric grill or grill pan and work in batches to grill the prawns, I cooked mine for 2 minutes on the electric grill, if you use a grill pan, cook them for 2 minutes on each side
- for the herby garlic butter sauce, melt the butter in a pan set over a medium heat
- add the chopped garlic and chilli flakes and fry for 30 seconds
- add the chopped herbs and season with black pepper
- drizzle it over the cooked prawns
Expert tips
You can never go wrong with prawns when it comes to impressing your guests, and this recipe is really easy to put together, but so delicious!
Make sure the prawns are cooked until pink, once they change their colour into pink, they are cooked. Overcooking them makes them tough and rubbery, so best to keep an eye on them, they really don't need long.
Depending on the size of the prawns used, they will cook faster or they might need an extra minute on the grill - also, the type of grill you use will dictate the cooking time too!
