Wild blackberries are one of the best things about late Summer/ beginning of Autumn. Juicy, incredibly delicious and not to mention, absolutely free, wild blackberries are so much fun to pick up, bring home and turn them into yummy recipes. And, of course, they are also amazing to eat straight from the bush!
It's one of my favourite things to do at this time of the year, take my kids out for adventures on their bikes, and stop to pick up some blackberries while we are out and about, it has become a tradition that we keep every year.
Tips for picking Wild blackberries
Don't pick wild blackberries from highly-polluted areas, like busy roadsides, industrial areas or anywhere they would have been exposed to fumes or other contaminants.
It's also a good idea not to pick up berries that are too low to the ground, as they could be contaminated by animals.
Pick ripe, juicy blackberries that comes off easily when picked up. If they are still firm, even if they look ready, chances are they aren't very sweet, but rather bitter.
Wash before use, gently rinse them under cold water and pat dry with kitchen towel. If not consumed or used within a few days, you can also freeze them for later use.
