Ingredients

  • 1 ready-rolled puff pastry sheet
  • 150 g nutella (½ cup)
  • 1 small egg
  • ½ tablespoon icing sugar (confectioners' sugar)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius (375 Fahrenheit, 170 fan oven).
  • Using a sharp knife, cut a vertical trip of puff pastry of about 2 cm / inch to use as broomstick for each broom.
  • Spread a thin layer of nutella along the puff pastry strip, leaving the edges clean.
  • Roll it up tightly, then slice it into 6 small rolls that have the same size.
  • Cut the remaining puff pastry sheet into 12 squares, and spread a layer of nutella onto each square, leaving the edges clean.
  • Place 2 pastry squares together to form a thicker squares, you will end up with 6 squares.
  • Using a sharp knife, make thin cuts into each square, stopping about 2 cm/ 1 inch away from the top edge.
  • Place the broom stick in the middle of the top edge, and lightly wrap the uncut edge around it to form a broom.
  • Repeat with the rest of the pastry.
  • Arrange the brooms onto a baking tray and brush with egg wash.
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.
  • Remove the tray from the oven, allow the pastries to cool down completely, then dust with icing sugar.

Notes

  • I worked with ready-rolled puff pastry for this recipe, but if you use frozen pastry, make sure it's fully thawed, yet still cold. Warm pastry is tricky to handle, and it won't puff up as well.
  • When spreading nutella, go for a thin, even layer. Too much nutella will make the pastry messy to roll, and might prevent it from baking properly.
  • I shaped my broomsticks entirely from puff pastry, but you can also use pretzel sticks as handles.
