Soft Homemade Pretzels, German-Style, a delicious snack that makes a great addition to the school lunch box or the picnic basket. Loved by the little ones and grown-ups alike.

Ingredients
  • 400 g strong bread flour
  • 2 tsp active dried yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 50 ml vegetable oil
  • 100 ml milk
  • 150 ml water
  • 1 egg
  • sesame seeds, caraway seeds to garnish
Instructions
  1. Warm up the milk in the microwave just for about 10 seconds, it has to be warm, but not hot to touch.

  2. Add the sugar and yeast and mix well.

  3. Leave the mixture to prove for 10 minutes, it will rise and become foamy.

  4. In a large bowl, add the flour, salt, yeast mixture, water, oil and knead for 5 minutes. The dough comes together really nicely, it does not stick to the bowl and is easy to work with.

  5. Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel and leave to double up its size for about one hour.

  6. Transfer the dough to a slightly oiled work surface and shape 10 balls.
  7. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C, (356 Fahrenheit).

  8. Roll each ball into a long thin rope, then shape it into a pretzel.
  9. Slightly beat the egg and brush each pretzel with it, the sprinkle sesame seeds and caraway seeds over.

  10. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden.

  11. Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes, then serve either warm or cold.
