Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup boiling water

For frying

  • 3 cups vegetable oil

For coating

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, sift the flour, add the baking powder and mix well.
  • Make a well in the middle and add the boiling water and oil.
  • Use a spatula to mix everything well into a thick dough.
  • In a deep frying pan/pot, heat up the oil.
  • Transfer the dough to a sturdy piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle.
  • Pipe a churro of about 10 cm /4 inches long, and use kitchen scissors to cut it in order to drop it in the hot oil.
  • Fry for 2-3 minutes until golden, then transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper to absorb the excess oil.
  • In a bowl, mix the cinnamon with sugar, and coat each churro well.
  • Serve with chocolate dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Piping bags are not as sturdy as they should be, if you find it tricky to pipe out the dough, double up the bags to make it stronger.
  • Use a neutral cooking oil for frying up the churros, as a stronger oil like olive oil might change the taste slightly.
  • Churros are best served straight away, while they are perfectly crispy, as when they cool down they tend to lose their crispiness.
